Walt Disney World Tip #2528 - Saving for Spending

We wanted to go on vacation, enjoy it and not come home with a mountain of debt. We chose a package with the Dining Plan option, so we had our meals paid for. Since I planned our vacation over a year in advance, I started saving our daily "spending allowance" well in advance. I took an envelope with each day on it and saved $100 cash per day (this worked for the three of us going in our party). The envelopes were sealed and placed in the safe at our hotel. Each morning I would get an envelope for that day and know what I had to spend that day. We never spent that amount so what we had from the day before was carried over to the next day and so on. We waited to buy souvenirs on our last day (this gave us time to shop around for what we really wanted). We paid cash for everything and even had money left over when we arrived home. When my children were younger we did the same thing...gave them an amount (usually $10) they could spend and gave it to them in Disney Dollars. This way they waited, shopped around and got what they wanted. It was a win win for everyone and a great lesson in budgeting for my kids!
