I received this question from reader Connie at support@passporter.com:
I know the name of the long houses but when you talk to Disney staff they refer to building 1, 2, etc. Do you know what number is assigned to each longhouse? Just curious as this came up during a phone conversation about current construction situation and what buildings were partially closed. They only had numbers and not names and did not know.
I did not know the building numbers myself, but with some research and sleuthing, I found them. Here is the PassPorter guidebook map of the Polynesian with the building numbers on each longhouse:
And while we’re on the topic of the Polynesian, I know some of you are wondering about its renovations — after all, parts of the resort and the beach closed on 9/13/2013 for refurbishment and construction of the new Disney Vacation Club villas. Disney sent out a press release on 9/17, indicating the new villas would open in 2015. So this means it’s likely that areas will be closed, or inaccessible, for some time. I’ve made a second map indicating the areas that are currently closed:
It’s not entirely clear which longhouses are open and closed at the moment, but if you want to be away from the majority of the construction, request a room on the west side.
What about future construction? Disney hasn’t released this information yet, but it appears that there will be some renovations to the Nanea Volcano (themed) pool and Never Land Club at the start of 2014 and going until at least the end of March 2014. Official closure dates are January 1-March 31 for the Never Land Club. Also, there will be work on the Great Ceremonial House, but those dates are unknown.
Also, there’s a hint that there’s a name change coming soon to this venerable resort. Speculation exists that the name may change to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, based on a new sign that went up outside the Great Ceremonial House in October. It does make sense when you consider the addition of the new DVC villas to come in 2015.
There’s also a rumor going around that the popular Trader Sam’s Tiki Bar at Disneyland will be coming to the Polynesian. Trader Sam’s was originally thought to be a part of the new Disney Springs (the renovated Downtown Disney project). This rumor comes from PassPorter member Tikiman, who maintains the Unofficial Polynesian Resort Site and keeps a close eye on the resort and its changes. I recommend a visit to his site to learn more about the construction and it’s progress.
