I love Pinterest, don’t you? Pinterest is my virtual bulletin board, organizing my ideas and inspirations so I can find them later. I also use it for PassPorter, as a way to share our photos and articles, or save “sightings” of PassPorter photos and reviews I find online. Pinterest has quite a number of uses, and this morning, I discovered a new use …. MAPS!
It seems that just this morning Pinterest released a new feature — the ability to “stick” your pins on pretty maps, provided by FourSquare. Anyone can make a map and pin things to it. Imagine pinning photos of things you want to visit at Walt Disney World or Disneyland, right to the spot on the map! What a fun way to organize your pins and visualize your ideas.
So how does it work? To map a pin, start by going to Pinterest and login (if you don’t have an account, it’s free to start one). Now click “Create a board,” making sure you toggle the “Add a map?” setting, then click the red Create Board button.
Tip: You can also just modify an exiting board to include a map by changing the setting for “Add a map?” to Yes, and then Save Changes.
Now you can choose to pin to your map-enabled board, either from your existing pins (just click PinIt and add it to your new board) or from a new place.
Now that you have a pin (or two) on your map-enabled board, you need to map it to tell Pinterest where it is. Go to your map-enabled board, find the pin, and click the plus sign next to “Map this pin.”
Type in a search term and find your pin’s location. This can get a bit tricky if you’re not already AT that location on the map, because it looks near where the displayed map’s location. So find your general location first (i.e., Magic Kingdom) using your mouse and the + (zoom) button on the map, then search on the specific location.
If you can’t find your location, it may be a spelling issue, a location issue (tip: zoom closer), or it may just be that it isn’t there. If it’s not there, you can add a new location in FourSquare at https://foursquare.com/add_venue — be sure to check their style guide for adding places, too. Once you’ve added your location, come back to your map-enabled board and search again — it should show up right away!
I’ve just started a new map-enabled board over at Pinterest called “Walt Disney World Photo Map” so you can see how this works. Take a look and explore the links. I’ll be adding more of my favorite photos. If you have photos you’d like to add to this map, let me know and I’ll invite you to be a editor on the board!
